Bellin Run Kids for Running prepares kids for 33rd annual road race
GREEN BAY — The Schneider National Foundation will boost local efforts to encourage healthy living and fitness among children by supporting this year’s Bellin Run Kids for Running program.
“The Bellin Run tries to encourage people to become active and live a healthful lifestyle, not just for a weekend, but year round,” said Randy Van Straten, Bellin Run race director. “The Schneider National Foundation traditionally has shared this ideology and is again doing its part to help promote health and fitness in Northeast Wisconsin through its continued sponsorship of the Kids for Running program.”
Kids for Running gets children in third through eighth grades involved in the 10K (6.2-mile) Bellin Run. The program draws in children from across Wisconsin and into Michigan from both public and parochial schools. Last year, the program drew 41 schools from Wisconsin and Michigan and 2,051 kids and 400 trainers to the Bellin Run.
This year’s program is expected to draw more than 2,600 kids from 47 schools.
The foundation sponsored Kids for Running last year. It’s a welcome role, said Jean Vanden Langenberg, Schneider National Foundation.
“The Kids for Running program allows us to continue our support of community health and fitness efforts,” she said. “The program, with its focus on encouraging kids in our community to get active and healthy, is in perfect sync with our own efforts.”
Students that participate in this year’s program will receive a Bellin Run T-shirt and Kids for Running T-shirt.
“The Bellin Run is a great way to illustrate for kids the importance of fitness and a healthy lifestyle in a non-competitive environment,” said Tia Schartner, Kids for Running coordinator. “When the kids get together to run on race day, it’s an incredible learning experience charged with the excitement of the day. It’s an experience we hope they carry with them well into their adult lives.”
