GREEN BAY - Bellin Health's bariatric surgery program was recently recognized by Blue Cross and Blue Shield and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association by being named Green Bay"s only Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery.

The national distinction means that Bellin's bariatric surgery program has met stringent criteria as established by expert physician panels and demonstrated better surgical outcomes and a consistency of care for patients.

"This is quite an honor for us," said Cynthia Geocaris, M.D., medical director for the hospital's bariatric surgery program. "This distinction helps reinforce what our team, and Bellin in general, strives to do on a regular basis, that is, provide quality care with successful, desired outcomes for all of our patients."

The recognition of Blue Distinction Centers for Bariatric Surgery is part of a national effort to offer higher quality, affordable and safer specialty care. Bellin is one of just six Blue Distinction Centers for Bariatric Surgery in Wisconsin.

"The goal of the Blue Distinction Centers is to give consumers the information they need about complex conditions, procedures and specialty care resources, empowering them to make more effective health care decisions," according to a program description by Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight reduction surgery, can in many cases, aid severely obese people in their efforts to shed potentially life-threatening excess pounds.
