FastCare, Shopko set to open retail health clinic

05/29/2009

GREEN BAY — FastCare and Shopko recently announced plans to open a new retail health clinic in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

The clinic, Avera St. Luke’s FastCare, will open in July in the Shopko store in Aberdeen. It will operate as a service of St. Luke’s in partnership with Aberdeen Family Physicians.

“This new clinic will address a specific need in our community,” said Todd Forkel, vice president of clinic and network operations at Avera St. Luke’s. “It offers convenience and quick care for families with minor health care needs.”

“By offering a specific menu of services and convenient daytime, evening and weekend hours, this type of service is more efficient and less expensive than using the hospital’s emergency department,” said Mike Bettiga, Shopko’s chief operating officer and executive vice president of retail health. “FastCare is a perfect fit with Shopko’s expertise in retail health which includes our pharmacies, our eye care centers and our retail health care products. This concept increases accessibility to health care at a low, set cost and adds value for our customers – today’s busy families.”

The clinic will have a well-defined and limited scope of clinical services – sore throat, fever, flu and colds, ear and sinus infections, skin rash and allergies – and a system for referring patients to physicians when symptoms exceed the clinic’s services.

To ensure continuity of care of patients, Avera St. Luke’s FastCare will be linked to the Avera electronic medical records system. However, people who are not Avera patients can still use FastCare.

The retail health clinic has unique characteristics:

· It will only accept walk-in patients
· Services will be offered for a flat fee of $49 which can be billed to insurance
· It will be open from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday-Friday; 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. It also has holiday hours.
· Services will be limited to basic health care needs of patients 18 months and older
· Patients will be seen by a nurse practitioner or physician assistant who will refer to a primary care physician if necessary
· The nurse practitioner or physician assistant may prescribe medication
· Clinic staff will offer to send a report to each patient’s primary care physician

Shopko has FastCare clinics in other stores. “We have received positive feedback on each of our FastCare locations, and I am certain our Aberdeen customers will be just as pleased with the convenience and service,” Bettiga said.

Avera St. Luke’s is working with Bellin Health System, which established the FastCare brand of retail health clinics in 2006. Bellin is an integrated health care delivery system in Green Bay. Founded in 1907, Bellin operates five FastCare clinics in Northeast Wisconsin and has partnered with 14 other health systems to establish another 19 other FastCare operations in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan and South Dakota.
