GREEN BAY – Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball fans and breast cancer supporters will be able to bid on the pink jerseys that the team will wear during the Saturday, Feb. 13 Pink Zone game. The event will benefit The Cancer Team at Bellin Health and the Ribbon of Hope Foundation – a local support group for breast cancer patients.
The Pink Zone game against the UW-Milwaukee Panthers tips off at 5 p.m. at the Kress Center on the UW-Green Bay campus.
The Pink Zone is a unified effort by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in the community and beyond through a series of games in February.
Breast cancer survivors are invited to attend the Green Bay Phoenix Pink Zone game where they will receive a free game ticket and a commemorative Pink Zone T-shirt. Survivors should contact the Green Bay Athletics Ticket Office at (920) 465-2625 for their complimentary ticket.
Fans can bid on the game-worn jerseys online at www.greenbayphoenix.com beginning today. The auction will close at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13.
In 2008, more than 1,200 teams and organizations participated in the Pink Zone initiative, reaching more than 830,000 fans and raising $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research. The 2009 campaign raised over $1.3 million, reached over 912,000 fans, unified more than 1,600 participating teams and organizations, and saw more than 50 schools break attendance records at their event.
According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer among women in the United States, accounting for nearly one out of every four cancers diagnosed. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. One in eight American women who live to be 85 years of age will develop breast cancer, a risk that was one out of 14 in 1960.
