02/18/2011

SURING — Bellin Health Family Medical Center-Suring will offer free diabetes screenings on Thursday, Feb. 24.

The free screenings, and an accompanying questionnaire, will be scheduled between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Participants are encouraged to fast for at least two hours before their scheduled screening.

The screenings will include measurements of fasting blood sugar and Hemoglobin A1C – a measurement of the average blood sugar over time. Results will be summarized by Teresa Watters, a nurse practitioner at Bellin’s Suring clinic, 307 Manor Drive.

Diabetes is a chronic disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. There are about 25 million children and adults in the United States who have diabetes. Approximately 79 million people have pre-diabetes.

Nearly 2 million people age 20 and older were diagnosed with diabetes in 2010.
