OCONTO — Bellin Health Oconto Hospital will hold a free heel scan screening on Thursday, March 28. The scan is designed to check for osteoporosis, a bone condition.
An appointment is required to receive a free screening, which lasts about 10 minutes. Available times are 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Screenings will take place at Bellin Health Oconto Hospital, 820 Arbutus Ave., Oconto.
Dr. Lisa Allen, a board certified family medicine physician, will be the attending doctor. She will offer participants individualized risk factor evaluations.
Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass leading to fragile bones and an increased risk of fractures, typically in the hip, spine and wrist.
A common misconception about osteoporosis is that it is a disease affecting the elderly.
“Bone loss can occur in people’s earlier years if they don’t take the necessary precautions, including proper exercise and daily recommended doses of vitamins,” Allen said. “People concerned about osteoporosis should also quit smoking, or better yet, don’t start. Also, they should be cognizant of their alcohol consumption.”
Osteoporosis is a public health threat for an estimated 44 million American women and men aged 50 and older, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
Appointments for the one-on-one heel scan screening are required. Please call (920) 445-7373 or (888) 758-7373 for more information.
