(Dr. Yap on Nephrectomy)
Robotic-assisted surgery is particularly suited for the treatment of kidney cancer when a nephrectomy, the removal of a kidney or partial nephrectomy, is called for. The benefits to the patient are great, with one of the largest benefits being the use of small incisions in the muscles surrounding the kidneys as opposed to a long, potentially debilitating incision that can be very painful and take a long time to heal. In addition there are other benefits including less blood loss and faster recovery times. We are the only program in Northeast Wisconsin performing robotic-assisted nephrectomies. And we consider it to be the procedure of choice for kidney removal…so much so that we no longer perform what we consider to be lesser procedures.
