Influenza, commonly called the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness and may lead to death.
Vaccine is administered via an injection or through FluMist which is sprayed directly into the nasal cavity. The flu shot will be administered to people 13 and older, including healthy people and people with chronic medical conditions. FluMist – a vaccine made with live, weakened flu viruses that do not cause the flu – is approved for use in healthy people 2 to 49 years of age who are not pregnant.
One in five people in the United States get the flu every season. The virus hospitalizes an estimated 226,000 Americans annually and kills another 36,000 each year. Influenza is the nation's seventh leading cause of death.
