Zumba event to aid man’s cancer fight
GREEN BAY — Friends of Darryl Beers of Green Bay plan to use the moves, sounds and high energy of Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia, Reggaeton, Flamenco and a little belly dancing this weekend to help him fight off cancer.
The dances and music are all elements of Zumba, a recent Latin dance-inspired fitness class that uses high-energy music to get participants grooving their way into shape. A Zumbathon to raise funds for Beers’ cancer treatments will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 23 at Bellin Health’s XL Performance Center, 1630 Commanche Ave.
The public event also will include a silent auction, a brat/hot dog sale and bake sale. A suggested tax-deductible $20 donation gets participants in the class. The silent auction has more than 90 items, including Green Bay Packers pictures, hotel stays, restaurant gift certificates and more.
“Darryl is a wonderful person with a huge heart,” said Michelle Erdmann, team leader for sports and fitness at Bellin Health. “He survived neck cancer in 1996 and needs help this time around to fight off this new cancer.”
In February, Beers, a former yoga instructor for Bellin Health, was diagnosed with stage III lung cancer. Generally, that means that the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes in the middle of the chest away from the lungs. Stage III cancer treatment typically involves a combination of chemotherapy and radiation. Surgery also is a possibility.
“We’re looking forward to getting this party rockin’ with the public’s help,” said Debbie Krysiak, a Zumba instructor and co-organizer of the benefit. “Darryl will be blessed by everyone’s participation and giving. Proceeds will help him fight the good fight.”
