(Marinette, WI) Bellin Health today announced it has become the sole owner of NorthReach Healthcare, effective Monday, June 16, 2014.
Our commitment to continuing to serve the community was the main driver in our decision to purchase Bay Area Medical Center’s 50 percent share of NorthReach, said Chris Woleske, executive vice president, Bellin Health. This ensures patients will be able to continue their relationships with their trusted local clinics and providers. Patients deserve stability and continuity. That is one of our major goals.
NorthReach was formed in 2000 as a partnership between Bellin and BAMC to address the area’s healthcare needs and to ensure those communities served received excellent healthcare from quality physicians and other healthcare professionals.
On March 4, 2014, BAMC presented Bellin with an offer that enabled Bellin to either sell its ownership interest in NorthReach to BAMC or purchase BAMC's entire interest in NorthReach. BAMC's offer included a term that required Bellin to terminate certain noncompetition and nonsolicitation obligations in NorthReach's Operating Agreement. Shortly after receiving BAMC's offer, Bellin filed a lawsuit against BAMC asserting that BAMC's offer was invalid. Although Bellin moved the Marinette County Circuit Court to rule that BAMC's offer violated the Operating Agreement's terms and was therefore invalid through a procedure known as summary judgment, the Court denied Bellin's motion and scheduled a trial on Bellin's claim later this year. As a result of the Court's ruling, BAMC's offer and Bellin's 15-day timetable to respond to the offer after the Court's ruling remained intact. That is why we acted now and purchased BAMC’s ownership shares, added Woleske.
"Bellin's move to own 100 percent of NorthReach will benefit NorthReach doctors, staff and patients, explained Woleske. Not only does Bellin's ownership ensure stability, Bellin will increase the level of services our health system offers to residents of Marinette/Menominee and the surrounding region. We will strengthen our local presence by delivering a team of physician specialists to improve the level of care available to the community. That means:
Bellin Health has been a trusted name in this region for more than a century, added Woleske. Our philosophy of promoting and providing access to excellent healthcare on a local level is evidenced by our strong relationships in communities throughout the region, including the neighboring communities of Iron Mountain, Escanaba and Oconto.
NorthReach, which employs more than 180 health care providers and staff, has eleven locations in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, including:
