The Valve Center at Bellin Health

Treating and managing heart disease is becoming increasingly complex, and there are now many choices for diagnosis and treatment depending on your particular problem. When it comes to valve disease, we provide you with all the diagnostic and treatment options through a multidisciplinary valve clinic. This means that, as a patient, you only need to visit one place to receive the most cost-effective and complete evaluation of your heart problem. At the same time, you will have access to the safest, least painful, and most successful treatments available.

The Bellin Health tradition in heart care spans more than 40 years of providing groundbreaking heart care to Northeast Wisconsin. We continually improve our capabilities through upgrades in technology and recruitment of the best and brightest heart care physicians. Our medical staff posseses advanced expertise in all areas important to valvular heart disease including echocardiography, interventional cardiology, cardiac CT and MRI imaging, and minimally invasive heart valve surgery.

Recently we were selected as a regional center for the implementation of Edwards Life Sciences Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement program (TAVR).

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

Bellin Health Systems is one of only five regional heart surgery programs advanced enough to pass the selection criteria for use of the Sapien Heart Valve.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR, is a procedure that involves replacing the aortic valve with an artificial heart valve while allowing you to avoid open-heart surgery.

By placing a catheter in a blood vessel in the groin (femoral artery), the heart team is able to pass the new valve over a wire under x-ray guidance and position it inside the diseased valve opening. The new valve is mounted on an expandable metal frame that is expanded with a balloon to fix it in place. It is very effective in the treatment of aortic valve stenosis. Even though the procedure is used around the world, it is relatively new to the United States and is only approved for use in patients who are not healthy enough to undergo a standard heart valve operation.

Edwards Life Sciences produces the only FDA approved device for TAVR, and, as a company, has a detailed selection process to decide what hospital systems will be allowed to perform the valve procedure.

Because of our comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to heart care and the high level of results we achieve, Edwards Life Sciences has chosen Bellin Health Systems as one of five regional heart surgery programs advanced enough to pass their rigorous selection criteria and offer implantation of the Sapien Heart Valve.
