Esophageal Cancer Treatment
As part of the Cancer Team at Bellin Health, we work in a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of all malignancies. What that means is you will not only be treated by one of our experienced surgeons, but your condition will be presented to a panel of experts in oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, nutrition, pain management and any other discipline that would add to the quality of your experience. By including the entire team in the process of defining your options and designing your treatment, you can be sure you are receiving the most advanced and effective care possible. In the event our panel of physicians cannot meet your needs, we will facilitate a consultation at an outside institution for an additional opinion.
Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer related death in the United States and adenocarcinoma of the esophagus is increasing in incidence more than any other type of cancer. Treatment of these cancers in today’s world includes the consideration of radiation therapy and chemotherapy when appropriate to give you the best possible outcome with longevity and good quality of life. Where surgery is involved, we aim to give you the most complete operation with the least possible amount of pain, and the fastest return to normal activity and function. Our VATS Lobectomy program is a minimally invasive approach to lung cancer surgery that allows complete cancer removal with a surgery that can be completely healed within weeks rather than months.
Esophageal cancer surgery tends to be isolated in university environments today due to its complexity and risk. Bellin Health and the Cancer Team have maintained a strong commitment to treatment of this disease, and Bellin Hospital is recognized as a high volume center for esophagectomy (removal of esophagus) with excellent outcomes ratings. In line with our approach to cancer treatment in general, the surgeons here are committed to the guidelines established through the Society of Thoracic Surgeons as well as the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). As a result, they offer a complete array of surgical therapies for esophageal disorders including the complexities of problems related to esophageal cancer and its treatment.
There are a number of cancer related conditions involving the chest cavity including those listed above as well as thymic tumors, lymphoma and sarcoma. With the addition of robotic surgery and advanced capability in thoracoscopy, we can design your surgery in the safest, least painful, and most effective manner possible. We realize you did not choose to have a health problem at this time, but we invested years of training in preparation for the moment we meet you, and look forward to partnering with you through the successful treatment of your illness.
