Athletic Training Residency Program

The Bellin Health Athletic Training Residency Program is a one-year immersive program that begins in July of every year. This is a limited term (1 year), full time salaried position. This residency program provides the athletic training resident with educational and real-world opportunities in the clinical, outreach and industrial settings.

Mission
To provide the athletic training resident a comprehensive, immersive experience that enhances the knowledge and skills of an athletic trainer within the disciplines of clinical, outreach and industrial settings.  The aim is to develop a multifaceted healthcare professional that delivers exceptional patient care in a variety of settings. Through clinical, outreach and industrial athletic training experience supplemented by didactic education, the resident will find their path as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team.

Residency Program Goals

Goal 1: Advance the athletic training resident’s knowledge and skills to become a versatile healthcare professional that enhances patient-centered care and outcomes within the disciplines of clinical, outreach and industrial settings.

Goal 2: To further develop the athletic training resident into a leader in the field by increasing their multidisciplinary skills, such as communication, interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork. To develop the athletic training resident to act as an advocate for the field and future growth of the profession of athletic training.

Goal 3: Advance critical thinking abilities through analyzing, synthesizing and ultimately applying the information gained through this immersive experience and didactic education to advance athletic training practice and optimize patient care and outcomes.

Residency Program Objectives

Objective 1: To provide structured, comprehensive educational programming, in addition to hands-on athletic training experiences and mentorship training in the disciplines of clinical, outreach and industrial athletic training settings.

Objective 2: To possess skills needed to deliver patient-centered care as members of an interdisciplinary team, emphasizing evidence-based practice, quality improvement approaches, healthcare informatics and professionalism.

Objective 3: To provide an environment that requires interdisciplinary collaboration amongst members of a clinical, outreach or industrial practice team.

Program Outcomes

Outcome 1: Advance the athletic trainer’s knowledge within the specialty area of orthopedics, with advanced focus in the disciplines of clinical, outreach and industrial settings.

Athletic Training Residency Program Sample Calendar

  • Each of the three disciplines will have their own primary focus as well as secondary and tertiary focuses throughout the yearlong residency experience.
    • For example the month of August, the primary focus will be the outreach setting, the secondary focus will be the clinical setting and tertiary focus will be the industrial setting. For the month of January, the industrial setting will be the primary focus, the outreach setting will be the secondary focus and the clinical setting will be the tertiary focus.
  • Athletic training residents will complete on average 3-5 hours of didactic education per week.
  • This will position will average 32-40 hours/week between discipline assignments, didactic education and mentoring hours.

Meet the Team

Terry Beeck, LAT: Co-Program DirectorTerry Beeck, LAT: Co-Program Director: Terry has been a certified athletic trainer since 1994.  He has been a part of Bellin Health Sports Medicine since 1996.  He worked in the collegiate setting as an athletic trainer for 18 years before transitioning to the Team Facilitator role in Athletic Training Services at Bellin Health in 2012.  In that role, he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of 27 outreach athletic trainers, serving 31 Middle and High Schools over an 8,000 square mile radius in two states.  In 2022, he was promoted to Team Leader of Athletic Training & Strength and Conditioning for Bellin Health Titletown Sports Medicine & Orthopedics.

Allison Pahl, MS, LATAllison Pahl, MS, LAT: Co-Program Director, Recruitment Coordinator: Allison has been an athletic trainer for Bellin Health since 2017 and serves as program director of the Bellin Health Athletic Training Residency Program. Her responsibilities include the direction, conduct and oversight of the residency program. In addition to residency program director, she serves as the student coordinator for collegiate and high school athletic training students pursuing internship and observational opportunities at Bellin Health and provides sports medicine services at Brillion High School.

Roland Schmidt, LATRoland Schmidt, LAT: Mentor Coordinator: Roland has been a part of Bellin Health Sports Medicine’s team since 2001.  He has served many area high schools as an outreach athletic trainer, most recently partnering with Wrightstown High School. He has also been part of the Occupational Health team, serving as an industrial athletic trainer in several of our Northeast Wisconsin companies. Roland serves as a mentor in our PT Sports Residency program in addition to being a preceptor to MAT students.

Eric Lengas, MA, LATEric Lengas, MA, LAT: AT Discipline Subject Matter Expert: Eric has worked as an outreach athletic trainer at Bellin Health Sports Medicine since 2016. He currently provides athletic training services at Bay Port High School. In addition he began working in the Bellin Health Titletown Sports Medicine & Orthopedics clinic in 2020 with Dr. Kevin Shepet.

Stephanie Ticks, MS, LATStephanie Ticks, MS, LAT: AT Discipline Subject Matter Expert: Stephanie joined Bellin Health Sports Medicine team in July of 2022 and currently serves as the outreach athletic trainer at Green Bay West High School. Originally from the Appleton area, she graduated from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh with a bachelors in athletic training. She went to complete her masters in Kinesiology at Western Illinois where she was a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the athletic department as well as a teaching assistant for multiple Kinesiology courses.

Abby Klicka, LATAbby Klicka, LAT: AT Discipline Subject Matter Expert: Abby has been an athletic trainer for Bellin Health Sports Medicine and Bellin Health Ergo/Rehab since 2014. She is a certified ergonomic assessment specialist, focusing on workplace injury prevention, treatment, and employee safety. Abby also is an outreach athletic trainer providing sports medicine services at West De Pere High School. She currently serves as a mentor to physical therapists in Bellin Health’s Physical Therapy Sports Residency program.

Admission Requirements

To qualify for admission to the Bellin Health Athletic Training Residency Program, applicants must have:

  • Certification from the BOC and in good standing
  • Athletic Training Licensure (or eligibility) in the State of Wisconsin
  • Current certification in BLS (or equivalent) CPR/AED
  • NPI Number
  • Must have valid driver’s license and satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)

Applications are accepted from January 2 through March 15
Once applications are received, applicants will be contacted for phone interview(s) and references will be checked. Appropriate candidates will be invited for a formal interview in March pending scheduling of applicant and program committee members.

Please note, incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications must be received in full, no later than March 15 in order to be considered. Any applications received after this time will be reviewed at the discretion of the AT Residency Program Director.
