Anodyne Therapy is a form of light therapy using a single monochromatic near-infrared energy (MIRE) that emits light energy in the near-infrared spectrum; this can increase blood circulation up to 400%. This improvement in circulation has been theorized to account for improvements in peripheral neuropathy. MIRE is a safe, drug-free, and noninvasive treatment for diminished sensation or pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
Studies have also suggested that the use of MIRE to improve sensation can improve balance, decrease the risk for falls, and reduce wound incidence. MIRE can be used in physical therapy to address pain and sensation deficits, or in combination with neuromuscular re-education and therapeutic exercises to improve balance and proprioception to decrease risk for falls.
