Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic physical therapy can be used in conjunction or an alternative intervention to the traditional land based physical therapy. Aquatic therapy focuses on rehabilitation by using the properties of the water for a therapeutic advantage. The buoyancy of the water provides an environment with less joint stress, which allows increased exercise tolerance and improved mobility. The viscosity of the water adds an added source of resistance to allow for progressive strengthening. Your physical therapist will work with you to build a treatment plan focused on long term goals of land based exercise and independence with symptom management.

Bellin Health currently offers aquatic therapy at these locations:

  • Syble Hopp School - Bellin partners with school to offer aquatic services
  • Bellin Health - Oconto Hospital and Medical Center
  • Bellin Health Marinette - partnering with River Cities Community Pool

In collaboration with Bellin Health’s skilled physical therapy staff members, an individualized aquatic program will be developed to progress towards personal goals and optimal recovery. Current evidence supports the use of hydrotherapy and exercise to optimize well-being, improve pain management strategies, and improve health status in the management of conditions including:

  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Muscle spasms
  • Decreased functional endurance
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
